WLAN in Kista Galleria

To visualize the benefits of wireless communication in commercial environments, an operator neutral WLAN has been established in the shopping mall Kista Galleria, located only a stone's throw from Electrum.

The wireless network is one of the results from a M.Sc. project called wOpenMall conducted by students at KTH in spring 2002 sponsored by Ericsson Enterprise, Skanska IT Solutions and Idé-El.

The market for wireless LANs is growing rapidly all over the world. At the moment, there are wireless LANs at about 400 spots in Sweden, and the number of wirelss LANs is expected to increase 20 times within the next four years. The places with access to wireless networks are today mainly offices, airports, hotels, universities and cafe´s. The wireless LANs are today first and foremost for business people and students, but the the next step in the wireless development is to reach the general public.

What spot is better suited to reach a broader audience than Kista Galleria? A modern shopping mall located in Kista, the Silicon Valley of Sweden! IN Kista you are surrounded by students and and thousends of people working in the fields of computers, telecommunications, IT and electronics, Kista Galleria constitutes a golden opportunity for the wireless technology to reach a public that is used to technology in a commercial environment!

  Services

Location based pushed content
By downloading the Thinworks agent provided by A Brand New World, you can get location based pushed content to your handheld as you enter the mall. The content will come automaticallt as you pass information spots, so called pushed content.

The Tsunami system
Tsunami is an inexpensive and easily installed remote management system for distributed WLANs. Since a WLAN requires a certain amount of management, and commercial envronments like shopping malls often don't posses knowledge in this area, a remote management system handling distributed WLANs can be a solution. Tsunami offers this solution.

  Business Model

In cooperation with the mall owner, store owners, end-users and service providers, a business model for an operator neutral wireless network in a commercial environment has been deployed. Find out more about the business opportunities for a commercial WLAN by visiting the wOpenMall team at the exhibition in Electrum the 14th of August 10.00-14.00.

All information about the project can be found at the project web of wOpenMall .
