The Wireless Experience!

During the workshop you have a chance to get a wireless experience through demos and services provided in Stockholm and its surroundings.

If you bring a laptop or handheld, you have the possibility to connect to the StockholmOpen.Net access network providing access points at hotspots in the city, like the KTH campus, the KistaIP student housing area and the shopping mall in Kista, as well as in Kulturhuset, Kungsträdgården and the City Hall in the city center.

If you could not bring a device of your own, we have a limited number of laptops, handhelds and wireless cards for rent. Contact noc@ssvl.kth.se

Internet access

From the StockholmOpen.Net access network, you can get Internet access if you are accredited with at least one of the currently directly connected public or private ISPs, or any of their roaming partners:
Currently connected public ISPs
Arrowhead
Lidnet
Telia Homerun who also operate own access points at hotspots all over Scandinavia, including at two of the hotels on campus, Memory Hotel and Hotel Mr.Chip.
Yanzi Networks Tsunami service.
Currently connected private ISPs
KTH, if you are associated with an academic organization anywhere in the world using kerberos for authentication, you can choose KTH/SSVL as your upstreams provider free of charge and use your regular username@REALM and kerberos password to get access. Contact noc@ssvl.kth.se and your university will be added to the list of approved REALMS.

More ISPs are being connected via the open local Internet exchange in Stockholm Solix

Excursions and tours in different environments

You will all get a lot of opportunities to explore the campus environment since this is where most of the workshop activities are scheduled.

Some of you will get a first hand experience from living in the extremely networked student housing area, KistaIP where there are fiber connections to all rooms, currently used to deliver a 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet to an operator neutral access server. During the workshop, there will also be wireless access points at KistaIP connected to StockholmOpen.Net.

The Kista Shopping center KistaGalleria offers a wireless network providing an example of how such a network can be used in a commercial environment. This is left to the participants to explore on their own

If you take the time, you could experience other similar environments in downtown Stockholm at Kulturhuset and in Kungsträdgården on your own

If there is an interest, we can arrange a visit to Utö, in the archipelago of Stockholm to illustrate how user initiatives can bring an access network to a rural area in which no traditional operator can see any business.

Information and Communication Services

GeoNotes, a digital version of the yellow "post-it" notes, i.e. a location-based service allowing you to leave notes behind on a specific location, for others to read.

Real-time services: You are invited to follow an on-going fieldtest of IPTV, VoD and VoIP in the KistaIP student housing area.

Middleware

Thinworks is a mobile information platform and location based service (LBS) mechanism, designed to distribute location-based mobile content in IP-based wireless networks

Tsunami is an access point server with user management functionality. A first prototype was developed in a student project spring 2002.

Network Services and Protocols

StockholmOpen.Net supports a wide range of new network services and protocols. You are welcome to test some of them:
Mobile IPv4, providing IPv4-address portability
(Mobile)IPv6, to reach the 6bone and the native IPv6 network through the open network, you just need an IPv6 enabled computer.
